Top Tips to Maximize Job Fair Success

1. Plan Your Attack:
When you arrive, scope out which employers are there and if possible do some quick research (i.e. surf your phone) on your top targets before starting your networking efforts. Be prepared to introduce yourself (firm handshake, great eye contact and SMILE) and why you are interested in their firm based on your research or knowledge of their organization. Thank employers for being there and the chance to meet in person.

2. Don’t “Stop and Drop” Your Resume:
Connect with those manning the booths, ask them why they chose to work for their firm, how they got their current job, what future growth/opportunities they see in their organization beyond today’s hiring needs. Engage them in a dialogue and make sure to get their name and contact information if possible. Find a quiet spot to quickly take notes before moving on to the next employer. Follow up directly and via LinkedIn with a note of appreciation.

3. Gather Intelligence on Companies and Competition:
Job fairs feel crowded and overwhelming (for employers too!) but they are an amazing source of information on who is hiring, positions available and the chance to see your competition in person. These are insights you can’t get in traditional on-line application or interview process.

4. Dress For Success:
Business attire is never out of style at a job fair. Look sharp, put together and professional — you will be remembered.
